While non-black women around the world are spending millions of dollars trying to carved a body with Afrocentric physical features such as a nice round booty, kinky, curly or nappy hair, full lips, and high cheekbones, most sistas (black females) on the other hand continued to stress over their God-giving natural beauties. This “self-hate behaviors,” low-self-esteem or negative interpretation of what they defined as “ugly and unattractive,” are sometimes subconsciously projected onto others.
Such was the case in the recent trending on the blogosphere over the hairstyle of Gabrielle Gabby Douglas. While the talented 16-year-old, who made history by becoming the first African-American gymnast to win gold was focusing on “the game of her life,” a majority of women, mostly blacks, were on Twitter breaking blood vessels about her hair.
On Sunday, Douglas finally addressed the issue of her hairstyle. She was a little confused when she logged onto her computer after winning her second gold medal in three days and discovered people were debating her pulled-back look.
"I don't know where this is coming from. What's wrong with my hair?" said Douglas. She also added, "I'm like, `I just made history and people are focused on my hair?' It can be bald or short, it doesn't matter about (my) hair."
